New Year, New Goals

I saw an Instagram post that re-labelled New Years Resolutions as “Ins” and “Outs”. Whether you choose to create a resolution, list your “ins” and “outs” or casually tell a friend that you hope to drink less, excercise more, eliminate curse words, be a better sister/daughter it really does not matter. I think we all have things we want to work to improve and the new year seems like a natural time to create this clean slate of new goals. However, I think there are some important things to remember:

  • You can start new habits or goals anytime of the year.

  • Listing the goals or the resolutions is the easiest step, but they mean nothing if you do not take action.

So this year, I’m taking action on a goal I have had for a while - to create a blog. Developing a space where I can be creative and share my experiences as I explore truly makes me excited. One of the first steps I felt necessary to take while building this blog was to find some resources to help me find inspiration or learn something.

I googled “5 books to read if you feel stuck” and it lead me to a website Aimleaf.com where I found the following list of books:

  1. The Power of Now, by Eckhart Tolle

  2. The Compound Effect, by Darren Hardy

  3. Can’t Hurt Me, by David Goggins

  4. The $100 Startup, by Chris Guillebeau

  5. Shoedog, by Phil Knight

These nonfiction books were recommended as they provide perspective and powerful insights from inspirational people. So I am starting with the first book on the list, The Power of Now. I will report back once I finish it, as it is too early for me to provide an opinion. I plan to read all 5 in this order.

I am also journaling. This is something I have always struggled to start or stay consistent with. It feels foreign and strange to me. Writing about a topic, experience, or interest, I understand. Writing about my day, or my feelings, is not something that comes very easily to me. There are times that I literally have no idea what to write about and about 5 minutes later, I realize that I must have had something to say because suddenly I’m on page 3 of my journal entry. I try not to judge my writing, or if there was a point to it. I think it is important to just unleash whatever thoughts are running through my mind and put it down on paper.

Other goals I have for this year…

  • Run my first 10k

  • Develop a yoga or pilates practice

  • Cut out mindless scrolling - no social media for a least one week per month and limit scrolling to a couple times of week rather than every day

  • Positive attitude

  • More focus on creating memories with friends and family

This is my very first blog post. I can’t believe it. I’m doing the damn thing.

Be back next week.

Xo,

L
